Hi,
i think we forget the fact that on the gcalender it is pretty simple to add
people that are not even on it....that was it is easy to share and manage
events among very many other editing features..most closed source calendars
i have personally used do share mostly the same features.
I think using the gmail one is nice as we can easily invite people.
there are also many other features i can not list but why develop anther
when we can use what is available to us.
this is just my view.
I may be wrong.

Probably we don't want to put our project activity data on anything that we
don't control/host. If it's open source then it should be hosted on our
boxes. If it's not like that then we'll say No. Right?
