Ask Fedora multi language support

Hi

Ever since we launched Ask Fedora, I have had ambassadors and other
contributors ask me repeatedly about multi language support and it looks we
can finally enable it

For a working demo from the staging instance, refer to

https://ask.stg.fedoraproject.org/eo/questions/

However enabling it for all languages doesn't make sense with having
language specific communities moderating and managing that part of Ask
Fedora actively.
So if you want support for your native tongue enabled in Ask Fedora and you
are an ambassador or translator etc willing to be a moderator in the forum
for your language, please let me know or post to the Fedora infrastructure
list.  If already have askbot deployed in your local language, we can look
into migrating that data over as well if you wish to do so.

Note that askbot upstream considers multi language support as experimental
and there are some rough edges as described at

We will probably find other issues as we deploy it and work with upstream
to get it fixed.  Thank you for your patience.

A quick heads up:

While we have enabled a few languages in the staging instance,  our plan at
the moment is to only enable English and Spanish support in the production
instance.  We can enable support for more languages when language specific
moderators sign up and test the staging instance to make sure the language
support works well enough to move forward in the production deployment.

That's great news! I would like to see a Simplified Chinese (zh_CN)
instance of Ask Fedora, and I would like to be a moderator for it.

Instead of separate instances for zh_CN, zh_TW, and zh_HK, etc., I think
a generic Chinese instance (zh like in Wikipedia) is also OK. Not sure
what is the current implementation of AskBot.

PS: I'll copy to Fedora Chinese ML for more involvement.

I disagree with the zh proposal for all kinds of Chinese, but I'd like to
see an instance with Chinese support as well.

So first, most people (at least that's my experience here in Hong Kong)
are actually incredibly confused by the way Wikipedia implements this.
They just are surprised that some articles are written in Simplified
Chinese and others in Traditional Chinese, and they've never found the
switch that automatically translates the articles from one to the other.

Second, the automatic translation actually only works in one direction
(from Traditional to Simplified Chinese), so in order for it to work
well, everybody should exclusively write in Traditional Chinese. At that
point, it's pretty useless to have an automatic translation if all users
can read/write Traditional Chinese. ;)

So no, really, the Wikipedia setup doesn't work well in practice for
many people, and we shouldn't do the same mistake they did.

However, grouping zh_TW and zh_Hk makes a lot of sense, because both
write Traditional Chinese.

Similarly, grouping zh_CN with zh_SG makes sense as well, because (I
think, but I might be wrong, please correct me if that's the case) both
write Simplified Chinese.

The staging instance is only to check if things work. What issues are
you running into? The translation bits are done directly at upstream. I

The internal server error is for all languages at the moment. It was
working the other day when we asked a couple of questions to test it
out. I'll let Kevin know (cc'd).

I'm afraid you'll have to report the CSS issues upstream at
http://askbot.org/en/questions and wait for them to fix it. We're using
the latest version available at the moment. If upstream provides a
hotfix, we can apply that. Please tag the question with the "askfedora"
tag when you report it upstream. FWIW, it only appears to be present in
Greek. It looks like its caused by the length of the words.

You MUST initiate contact with a mentor." Should you feel ready to become
an ambassador, pick a mentor from the list (located in your region), sent
him/her an e-mail and go through the mentorship process.

So, the latest update (askbot 0.7.49) has been deployed in production (

Fenzi (nirik in #fedora-admin) if you are volunteering to be a moderator
for your language and want to enable support for it.  Add your details to

Ideally, we would want atleast two to three moderators for every supported
language. So reach out to your local community and get active community
helpers to sign up as moderators.   Moderation might take several hours
every week.

What does moderation involve?

Among other things, the following:

* Deleting spam and blocking the spammers
* Rephrasing questions and cleaning up the tags on a regular basis
* Reminders to upvote/downvote and select the right answers
* Deleting or rephrasing language that doesn't fit Fedora's code of conduct
* Try and make sure questions are answered in a reasonable amount of time
* Work with infrastructure team to test and provide feedback to the team,
especially when we are deploying newer versions of askbot
* Work with upstream on fixing bugs and ensure that translation in your
language is updated

I have promoted the folks listed to be moderators.  Also I have done the
same for Greek community for the first four but couldn't find the last two
in Ask Fedora.  In any case, 4 is enough to get started.  Kevin Fenzi has
just enabled language support for both Indonesian and Greek and is live
right now.

If anyone else needs language support to be enabled, please find a team of
volunteers to act as moderators and let me know.
