About passwords, it DOES help. Your thieves are specialised ones,
kind of
hackers, but most of them just steal something of value to resell, the
farther they can go is erasing everything to install some illegal Windows.
And even that is too much, most of time they just make up and excuse and
trade the device. Buyers can do whatever they want afterwards. So maybe
you loss everything, but at least you didn't give away your personal stuff.
About app permissions... Do you use any social media? Did it ever
happened to you that a website asks you to use your
email/FB/Twitter/whatever account and then oh! surprise! it starts doing
strange stuff once you granted it? No? It happened to me until I learned
to read the small letters below whenever a website or webapp requests
permissions. And it happens over and over to many people all over the
world because most of them DON'T read the little letters. And even that,
some webs or webapps misbehave anyway.
I think there's some misunderstanding here.
If you mean web applications (Gmail, FB...) it's really important do
have a strong password. Also your other suggestions are correct (don't
give login away and so). But I guess it may be a part of the "Web
security" part of your article.
What I mean is the local user password you use to login to the computer
- it can be easily avoided so if you have some important data only
encryption can help here.
