<fabian_a> fugolini: now you have the lead...i will log
<fugolini> ehehe, so just take a look at this link:
https://www.redhat.com/mailman/private/famsco-list/2008-September/msg0005...
<fugolini> fabian_a: thank you
* spevack doesn't want to be a pirate, actually
<fugolini> The agenda is well explained there.
<fugolini> First of all Release Parties Status:
<spevack> excellent... I think we talked about the release parties, at
least from a budget point of view, earlier.
<fugolini> We have just discussed about it in EMEA
<spevack> But just to be clear -- we have extra money from FUDCon Brno's
budget, so we can have more budget for release parties. I just need to
know how much before we say 100% :)
<fugolini> What I can say is that we are covering a variety of countries
this time, and yes, we will able to support those ones
<fugolini> I'll work to make an announcement when we will be near the
release
<fugolini> I hope fedora announce could help us. Moreover I'll send it
to Max, hoping he will be able
<fugolini> to see my mistakes.
<fugolini> :=
<fugolini> Any question?
<spevack> sounds good to me
<jmbuser> +1
<fabian_a> +1
<fugolini> So, next issue, but we discussed about it, few minutes ago:
Ambassadors list. FAmSCo taken a position, but we have to wait since FAD
NA 2008, before a announcement
<jmbuser> !
<fugolini> just because NA wanted to discuss all together. We have just
a EMEA opinion and other region
<fugolini> jmbuser:
<jmbuser> Is that position public?
<fugolini>
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-ambassadors-list/2008-September/ms...
<fugolini> I asked to pause the discussion until FAD NA, if there will
be reasonable topic to change FAmSCo position
<jmbuser> !
<fugolini> we will discuss it again. But after more than 40 (50)
feedback from Ambassadors community and after the well explained reasons
posted by experienced Ambassadors like Joerg
[https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-ambassadors-list/2008-September/ms...],
Robert[https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-ambassadors-list/2008-Septe...
and Chitlesh [https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-ambas
<jmbuser> That's fine by me.
<fugolini> jmbuser:
<jmbuser> eof
<fugolini> I'm sure moreover the decision is the only one.
<fugolini> "it isn't a compromise but the only way to stop the most
discussion we had in the project. "
<fugolini> *big
<fugolini> I'm sure everyone will happy, moreover in the Weekly report
you have a detailed description of this topic. I hope it would be clear
<fugolini> Anything for this topic?
<fabian_a> no
<fugolini> 3. New Members policy update: see the mail, I'm sure it a
well clear point
<fugolini> See the weekly report. I've done it just because it save a
lot of time. Maybe we could add it in the task list along with Weekly
meeting :)
<fugolini> 4. t.b.d.
<jmbuser> !
<fugolini> jmbuser:
<jmbuser> Thanks for the weekly report - makes it easier for me to follow
<jmbuser> eof
<fugolini> In fact, I'm sure it help a lot. I'm saying this because it
helps me too :)
<fugolini> For the 4th point: I have only few personal communications
<fugolini> the first one is that I'll be unavailable from 20 to 27.
* Frankly3D has quit ("Leaving")
<fugolini> The open topic to control are: Release Events and Budget
* ke4qqq has quit ("Konversation terminated!")
<spevack> !
<fugolini> the other discussion, Ambassadors list, it's posponed to Oct. 15
<fugolini> sp
<fugolini> spevack:
<spevack> I am a bit behind on getting payments to ambassadors so far in
September, but I'll catch up on all of it, and keep updating everyone on
the budget.
<spevack> EOF
<fugolini> great, I think there aren't absolutely problems
<fugolini> If you need to held a meeting to discuss about budget and
release events
<fugolini> just do it :) I've just talked with fabian_a about that, some
days ago
<fugolini> The last thing is Meeting time.
<fugolini> When I'll come back, my student-routine will restart, after 3
month and more of pleasure
<fugolini> I'll have to wake up at 5.30 UTC +2
* spevack will be able to make any meeting time in which he doesn't
already have another meeting.
<fugolini> That's mean 3.30 UTC
<spevack> fugolini: that is AWFUL
* spevack would die
<spevack> I am *not* a morning person at all ;)
<fugolini> i just done this last academic year :)
<fabian_a> that's early
<spevack> I consider it a great accomplishment if I am awake by 8:30
<fugolini> but i've to take 3 trains and a bus to arrive where i have to go
<jmbuser> ughh
<fugolini> BTW, my proposal is 18.00 with Summer time that mean 19.00
with sunlight time
* spevack makes a note to never complain about anything again
<fugolini> UTC naturally
<spevack> fugolini: I will +1 any proposal you make on meeting time
<jmbuser> likewise +1
<fugolini> don't worry, when you do this for more than a month, you
don't notice it
<fugolini> so if you couldn't be able at that time
<fabian_a> i'm not able to attend meeting before 20.00 utc because my
part time studies
<spevack> fugolini: a friend of mine once quit a job after they told him
he would have to be at work at 08:00
<fugolini> lol
<spevack> fugolini: so i admire greatly your commitment
<fugolini> I'm loving what i'm doing so
<fugolini> I don't feel sad :)
<fugolini> fabian_a: 20.00 UTC with sunlight time?
<fugolini> I don't know when will be the time change
<fabian_a> fugolini: 22.00 in your time zone
<fugolini> so with UTC+1 too?
<fabian_a> fugolini: or our time zone
<fugolini> In October, if I'm not wrong, we will move from UTC +2 to UTC +1
<fabian_a> yes
<fugolini> will be the same with UTC +1?
<fugolini> so 21.00 UTC
<fugolini> ?
<fugolini> with sunlight time
<fugolini> Just because I'll agree to held the meeting at 20.00 UTC
(with sunlight time, starting from ??october)
<fugolini> At least 20.30, like few months ago (before may)
<fugolini> Could be ok ?
<spevack> again, +1 to anything
<fugolini> that will mean 19.30 UTC +2 and 20.30 UTC +1
<fugolini> with UTC
<fugolini> sorry I missed with
<fabian_a> didn't we collect the times already a few month ago?
<fugolini> yes, we had a page
<fugolini> ok, I'll check it
<jmbuser> 19:30 UTC works for me
<fugolini> So can we finish the discussion in FAmSCo list?
<fugolini> (sorry for my language today, but I'm feel tired, weather is
changing)
<fugolini> Ok, so I'll update you about the available meeting times.
<fugolini> Anything else?
<fugolini> 3
<fugolini> 2
<spevack> talk to you all later... fabian_a see you next week
<fugolini> 1
<fugolini> == Meeting adjourned ==
<fugolini> Thanks everyone to join this meeting
<fugolini> I'm sorry for the time
<jmbuser> Thanks everybody, especially fugolini for moderating
<fugolini> I'll be here tomorrow afternoon
<fugolini> bye

<spevack> sorry
<spevack> MaxSpevack
<fabian_a> ok, not that much attendance ;-)
<fabian_a> First point: News from FAmSCo
<spevack> !
<glezos> DimitrisGlezos (semi-here)
<fabian_a> spevack,
<spevack> k
<spevack> well, just from the budget side of FAMSCo, I have a few things
to report.
<fabian_a> ok, go on
<spevack> first of all, we are continuing to get funds to the event
owners who have events coming up
<spevack> I ask all the event owners to continue to save copies of
receipts and stuff, which makes reimbursements much easier.
<spevack> Also, the t-shirts that Fedora EMEA e.V. purchased have
arrived, and they look great.
<spevack> i want to thank kital for handling that.
<spevack> we will be selling these shirts at events, so we will make
enough money to purchase more, and also for Fedora EMEA e.V. to have
some extra funds to sponsor travel, etc.
<spevack> one last thing
<spevack> I am personally a bit behind on fedora-ambassadors-list
reading the last week or so, so I want to apologize if there is anyone
waiting on me for a response that i haven't gotten to.
<spevack> EOF
<wonderer1> !
<fugolini> !
<fabian_a> wonderer1, then fugolini
<wonderer1> First of all I also want to thank kital, spevak and aal of
who else was involed to the T-Shirts. Question: in wich way we
(Ambassadors) get them for Events (over fedoraproject page xyz?)? do we
pay for them before selling them?
<wonderer1> EOF
<spevack> !
<fugolini> ok spevack talk you
<spevack> I can explain
<spevack> very easy
<spevack> So, I don't have the exact numbers here, but just assume for a
minute that each shirt cost 5 EUR to produce.
<spevack> And pretend that your event has a budget of 500 EUR.
<spevack> If you say "max, send me 20 shirts for my event" then I will
do that, and we will subtract 100 EUR from your event's budget.
<spevack> If you sell the shirts, then great. it can help pay for other
things at the event, or you can just give the money back and we'll hold
it for later.
<spevack> if you give the shirts away, that's ok too, because they are
"paid" for out of the event's budget.
<spevack> does that make sense?
<spevack> EOF
<glezos> spevack: yes
<fugolini> !
<fabian_a> fugolini,
<wonderer1> ok
<fugolini> Ok, i'll be brief, just two thinks from FAmSCo
<fugolini> During the past week we had two main announcment: the first
is the "New Members Policy" update
<fugolini> thanks to kital suggestions. Those changes will help better
focusing on people and will simplify new members and AMA too
<fugolini> Ambassadors Membership Administrators
<fugolini> for infos about this take a look at
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-ambassadors-list/2008-September/ms...
<fugolini> The last important update was the official position taken by
FAmSCo about Ambassadors list
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-ambassadors-list/2008-September/ms...
<fugolini> Moreover I thought it was necessary a pause to officialize it
<fugolini> and for general discussion until FAD NA 2008
<fugolini> The FAmSCo position is near-to-be-definitive. We need
feedback from NA community that actually haven't a definitive position
like EMEA has
<fugolini> After they opinion, and if there will not really BIG reason
against our position, we will officialize it
<fugolini> so, the discussion on this thread is paused until October
15th, if I'm not wrong (FAD NA)
<fugolini> That's all from a FAmSCo point of view updates.
<fugolini> For release events maybe we could discuss later (sorry I
don't have the meeting agenda with me)
<fugolini> EOF
<fabian_a> fugolini, thanks
<fugolini> thank you too fabian_a
<fabian_a> i guess that we can move on, or?
<fugolini> +1
<wonderer1> +1
<heffer> +1
<fabian_a> Ambassadors Membership Verification
<fabian_a> the
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Ambassadors/MembershipService/Verification
page is now up-to-date
<fabian_a> that's all...kital is not here
<fabian_a> so let's start with events
<fabian_a> have somebody something to say about a up-comming or past event?
<fugolini> !
<fabian_a> fugolini,
<fugolini> F10 Release Parties events: this year we had 3 events in EMEA
<spevack> !
<fugolini> spevack: talk you
<fugolini> I'll finish after you
<fabian_a> spevack and then fugolini again
<spevack> fugolini and i were talking the other day about funding for
F10 release events
<spevack> fugolini: there is going to be extra money from the FUDCon
Brno budget, that we can use to release events.
<spevack> that budget will be gone at the end of november, so if some
release events will be in December, we just have to get the Ambassadors
the money ahead of time.
<spevack> EOF
<red_alert> hi all, sorry for being late...only just arrived home
<fugolini> spevack: thank you, you answer is 100 words worth
<fugolini> BTW, this year we have more events worldwide but less in Europe
<fugolini> But this is only statistic.
<fugolini> As i wrote in
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-ambassadors-list/2008-September/ms...
<spevack> I think we are having about as many events as we can handle
with our current budget, worldwide. Personally I am pretty happy,
though I hope for responsible growth both in budget and events in the
future.
<fugolini> Before September 30th I want to know how much Events Owner
(EMEA too) will preview to spend
<spevack> but both have to grow at the same time!
<fugolini> Absolutely.
<fugolini> I have wrote an email asking people to write argumented money
requests, just to improve RE money distribution around the events.
<spevack> !
<fugolini> spevack: feel free to interupt me
<spevack> i think about it very simply.
<fugolini> you are the tresurer, you better than me
<spevack> Whenever i talk to ambassadors, i try to ask this question:
<spevack> "are you getting the resources you need, and is it easy for
you to get those resources and organize an event?"
<spevack> if they say yes, wonderful.
<spevack> if they say no, then I take notes. :)
<spevack> we just need to always be asking that question
<spevack> and improving any complaints.
<spevack> EOF
<fugolini> Sure
<spevack> FAMSCo works for Ambassadors!
<fugolini> absolutely. I hope people have understood this reading my
mail about RE
<fugolini> So, if there are Events Owner I invite them to post their
preview before that date. Max do you agree with me?
<spevack> yes
<fugolini> I hope to see great reports from EMEA too. We are covering
three country and I'm sure it will be a success. That our goal!
<fugolini> Any question?
<spevack> ? what do you mean "three countries"
<fugolini> fugolini.fedorapeople.org/remap.html
<fugolini> in EMEA we are covering 3 events in 3 different countries
<spevack> ah, for release parties
<spevack> i understand now
<fugolini> I'm sorry
<spevack> that is awesome!
<spevack> i love your map
<spevack> heh
<spevack> EOF
<fugolini> I hope next time, we will be able to imporve the organization
of these events in EMEA too. I'll add a topic for FAD EMEA about this
<fugolini> EOF
<fabian_a> thanks guys
<fabian_a> let me say something about events around and in switzerland
<spevack> open expo next week! :)
<fabian_a> openexpo is next week, right. spevack will help and talk at
this event. andreas and timea will help me there too.
<wonderer1> !
<fabian_a> wonderer1,
<spevack> fabian_a: i will bring Live CDs and tshirts and my smiling face
<wonderer1> I have a very short aking from GeroldKa for the sytems 2008
end of october in munich. I hope to get there with an OLPC near by the
OLPC project itself to represent fedora there.
<wonderer1> if anybody can and would help there, please tell me
<wonderer1> there is no budget (I try to get some from the OLPC guys,
but lets see).
<spevack> wonderer1: how much budget do you think you need?
<wonderer1> I hope to get an OLPC some days before to test it ( I only
have one at Linuxtag 2007 and Jens handed me once one out for some minutes).
<spevack> we have a few in EMEA, spread around various ambassadors
<wonderer1> spevack: at this time travel and hotel for 2 days. I can
collect the infos and mail it?!
<wonderer1> yes, I know (allready on the mailinglist ;-)
<wonderer1> I only want to tell here again and if there where some guys
who where there or knew some ... contact me please.
<wonderer1> EOF
<fabian_a> wonderer1, thanks
<spevack> wonderer1: that would be great
<spevack> wonderer1: if you send an estimate, we can try to find the budget
<wonderer1> spevack: Ok.
<spevack> EOF
<fabian_a> anything else about events in the near future?
<fugolini> !
<fabian_a> fugolini,
<fugolini> LinuxDay: I'm not the owner
<fugolini> But I want to say that lfoppiano and the Northern italian
ambassadors are doing
<fugolini> a great job trying to contact each LUG and focusing on
covering the biggest one.
<fugolini> Personally I will cover my province LUG, that has an
attendance of 500/1000 people
<fugolini> (many of them schools/businesses etc).
<fugolini> But that's offtopic.
<fugolini> Generally you can see what owner and helpers are doing
<fugolini> seeing this page
<fugolini> I don't find it, but make a search in Fedoraproject.org wiki
<fugolini> And you'll get all the informations about the kit we will
distribute around LUGs, speech that we hold etc
<fugolini> EOF
<fabian_a> http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraEvents/LinuxDay
<fabian_a> are we done for this month?
<fabian_a> i will adjourn in 20 s

<spevack> if anyone needs anything, you always can email me and i will
do my best! EOF :)

ambassador stuff - college campuses
by John Taber
Hi folks, just wanted to say that I'm going to excuse myself from the
ambassador list - I will not have the time to fly out to the Columbus
FAD meeting and participate in some of the things you want ambassadors
to do but will continue to be a big Linux/FOSS advocate and campus point
of contact.
On campus this semester I have already given out all of my dvd's to my
students, have figured out for other faculty and students that we don't
need to use Vista for our "Vista Blackboard" classroom mgmt system since
it runs with Java 6 installed on Fedora/Linux (and maybe using "iced
tea" but haven't tried it yet), and trying to encourage students to use
gcc as their compiler of choice (which it should be, it's simply
better!). I've also introduced them to version control as the first
step to encouraging them to participate in open source projects (since
they need to know how to check out and submit code).
I see 2 main initiatives that are needed for campuses: 1) an on-line
faculty LUG where faculty can share experiences, tips, etc and provide a
point of distribution for dvd's, some fun schwag, etc 2)the formation
of student run FUG's/LUG's (with faculty reps) - the student groups are
really the springboard for installfests, release parties, etc. I think
some sort of "campus box" is needed prior to each semester that will
have stuff for faculty and the student groups to give out and provide
for the student groups to run a couple of installfests. Maybe Fedora
can sponsor these mail lists / campus lug web sites ? Maybe student lug
webmasters get a free Fedora T-shirt, ball cap and maybe some other
recognition...
One of the biggest stumbling blocks that I still encounter for students,
faculty, and others in the corp world is the perceived fear of trying to
install Fedora/Linux, even as a dual-boot system and frankly even to
boot as a live-CD. People are just scared their system is going to be
messed up and they will be unable to work and in big trouble. We need a
web page that can be printed as a simple flyer with good, simple
graphics to hand out with dvd's that eases this fear, especially to deal
with the "dreaded" disk partitioning. From a marketing standpoint, one
of the biggest features we can request from the core team is to develop
some sort of on-the-fly partitioning in the install procedure.
I will be happy to continue working on these goals so feel free to stay
in touch and email me at drjohn.taber(a)gmail.com

IMPORTANT: F10 Release Parties deadlines
by Francesco Ugolini
To the Release Events Parties Owners who need some founds for their
Release Party,
It's important to know an estimated cost preview for your Release Events Party.
Please, to guarantee a transparent evaluation of budget requests,
write the reason for your preview (don't post I need nnn$ and stop).
The deadline is September 30th (2008/09/30), after that date, if the
interested people will haven't posted their F10 Release Party budget
preview (both in Ambassadors and FAmSCo list), will not be able to ask
for budget sponsorship for their own F10 release events. Only people
who have added their event in
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraEvents/ReleaseParty/F10 before
September 14th are qualified to post their budget cost estimation.
A small disclaimer:
Posting you estimated cost preview will not guarantee that FAmSCo will
give monetary support: we, with the big help of CA, are working hard
trying to figure out how many resources we can distribute and try to
make it according to the owner budget preview.
Just to save some money, and from a personal experience point of view,
I invite you to follow those three gold rules:
1. search for a free place: a library, a university room or another
free space are well enough to create an exciting and Fedora-like
event!
2. have a real estimation on how many people could attend it (maybe
sending some email to your local LUG list)
3. focus on Live USB Creation stations or network installation. CD/DVD
are great, but if the event is soon after the Release Date is quite
difficult (if not impossible) to have it.
I apologize for the inconvenience, I can assure next time FAmSCo will
better organize Fedora Release Events according to this experience and
the feedback we hope to receive from the community.
Best regards
Francesco Ugolini
p.s. The first part of the email is not intended for people who have
received their budget for the release event (see
fedoraproject.org/wiki/Ambassadors/SteeringCommitte/Budget to see who
have just received money).
