Re: Btrfs feature profile

Excellent. Tuesday at 11am it is then. I guess IRC would work best, but if
you still want to do an audio interview, that can work too. Thanks, Hannah

Fedora, Videos, and the Outside World
by Nicholas Ozorak
Dear Fedora Users,
As some of you may have seen from my last email, I am an Allegheny
Student working with some of my peers on video sharing strategies.
These are some of our observations.
Before this project, none of us had heard of Fedora, and many of us
were new to the concept of open source. It stands to reason, then,
that the general public may also be unaware of this type of software
development.
Some of the questions/issues that came up in our class were:
*What is open source?
*How do you explain the technology to those who do not understand tech-speak?
*What are the advantages of using open source software?
*What are the advantages of Fedora Project over other operating systems?
*Are other programs (MS Office, games, etc) compatible with Fedora?
*How does one acquire and install Fedora?
*How does one contribute to the Fedora Project?
Having videos that are easily accessible could help answer many of
these questions. These could include:
*How-to videos and tutorials
*Interviews with people affiliated with Red Hat and Fedora users
*Videos promoting how awesome Fedora is
My peers and I agree that the best outlet for sharing videos with a
large audience is YouTube. We are aware that some open source users
are not inclined to share their videos on YouTube, but here is one way
that Fedora Project could share both official and user-generated
content.
* Set up official Fedora Project accounts on websites like Internet
Archive and Dailymotion.
* Create videos on these accounts to establish them as being
officially part of the Fedora Project (welcome videos, tutorials,
features of Fedora, etc).
* Designate people to be official Fedora Project Video Account Managers.
* Allow other video creators and content developers to showcase their
Fedora-related work on the official channel(s) by sending their video
to the Account Master(s) for consideration. If accepted, these videos
would be added to the official channel.
* Open a YouTube account, and ask people if they are comfortable with
having their work(s) displayed on YouTube and/or other Flash-based
websites.
Besides the one billion views that YouTube receives on a daily basis,
the videos on YouTube have the largest potential to go viral. What
that means is that someone unfamiliar with Fedora who saw videos about
it on YouTube would be more inclined to share the video with others.
Additionally, videos that are related to Fedora Project (for example,
a random user's explanation of open source) may automatically link to
videos posted on the official Fedora Project YouTube channel.
Furthermore, if there were more videos pertaining to Fedora Project,
they would appear higher on a page rank of a Google search.
Ultimately, the videos that are released need to be easily accessible
and informational enough to educate the general public on what exactly
the Fedora Project is all about.

Small question regardin Fedora
by Nelson Marques
A small question, when talking about Fedora, we should use it as male
or female? In portuguese there is no genitive or "it", nouns always have
gender, either male or female.
One strange example is kernel, where it is refered often as male and
other times as female 8)
Anyway, this probably is more in the field of translation teams, but do
we have anything set for this kind of situations ?

Equinox Radiance Glass
by Nelson Marques
Hey,
Though this is redundant to this list or maybe not... I'm working on a
remake of "Equinox Radiance Glass" GTK2+ theme.
Basically what I'm trying to do is to have it looking like with the
Fedora colors.
This is something personal as I would realize that this might be too
"Ubuntu" looking. Anyway, it's one of my favorite themes.
For the artists hanging around, what would be the best colors to use to
keep it the closest possible within the Fedora branding?
I'm planning to have some minor modifications and inserts a metal color
(most likely silver) for some more sophisticated looks.
Anyone could point to some docs with RGB values of the Fedora branding?
(I know I could hack Clearlooks or Fedora), but trying to be a bit more
constructive.
This is mainly a private thingie, but if it comes too look decent I
wont mind doing the packaging for the future (despite of might be too
close to "Ubuntish").

Feature Profiles :: NetworkManager
by Nelson Marques
As most will know, I've got assigned with the NetworkManager Feature
Profiles. To accomplish this, I would like to point the following:
This is where I'm going to gather all the information I've collected.
This is not in any way a final version or something that will remain for
long. This is basically for me to work out a structure and later on will
move the reviewed contents to the final destination that someone will
provide me (Mel et all, could provide some input for the right place and
designation for this?).
Furthermore:
* The screenshots are not definitive, it's just a caption of things I
found relevant and might change depending on the interviews.
* I will use this very same page to work the raw interview material
(edited). Anyone has a though about where to place the un-edited
material for later usage if needed ?
* The screenshots do not hold valid information. No need to camp my
house door for free internet, or to worry about something regarding it's
information.
* I've taken the screenshots on Fedora 12, with a vanilla user, using
the vanilla pre-set artwork (GNOME + GTK Fedora Theme + Default pointer,
etc).
* Everyone is free to participate and edit (specially english native
speakers, since English isn't my native language).
* Any suggestions will be considered (most likely added/reviewed), I've
kept a special place (end of page) for anyone's suggestions.
Working on:
- Gathering background information regarding NetworkManager.
- Preparing Interviews for developers.
- wiki skills.
As always feel free to highlight and participate with comments,
suggestions, information, critics and whatever you find relevant.
Thanks all for surviving this wall of text.

Feature Profiles in Fedora 13 - SELinux
by Nelson Marques
Good people,
As I'm ending my Feature Profile on NetworkManager, and I volunteered
for another Feature Profile, I've got suggestions from Mel... One of the
spins or Zafara. The first sounds nice, but I'd rather focus on
something else. The second, well, I am not on it's status on Fedora 13.
Since we're running for Fedora 13 release, and I've spoken countless
times about SELinux, despite of it's complexity (some say simplicity),
I've decided to take the road of pain.
My personal crusade: SELinux in Fedora 13.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SELinux_in_Fedora_13
Be mindful that this will probably take some time. But I'm placing my
efforts into it. I already have some nice information on my mailbox from
my SWOT research, will need to take a more closer approach. There's also
a great presentation about this technology, I'm going to contact the
author asking if he allows me to use is base for my work. This
presentation is like "SELinux for dummies".
I will follow the same approach as I did for NetworkManager, and it
should be turn out into something like this:
1. SELinux
1.1 - Technology
1.2 - Howto
1.3 - SELinux in Fedora 13
2. Interview with the crew
2.1 - Interview #1
2.2 - Interview #2
3. Interview Possibility - out of scope
3.1 - Interview #1 > Sysadmin / Security Analyst
3.2 - Interview #2 > Security Analyst / BOFH
4. Biography's
No screenshot planned. This should be done by release time with some
luck. What are the times to have this stuff done ?

Let me echo that: awesome.
I'll have a screencast reflection up about this tomorrow (I hope).
That is, I just captured an actual video of the textual revision
replay, and will add some commentary/overlay, which I'll post online.
What I think was absolutely awesome about this was... well, there are
lots of things.
It's a blast being able to see the process; thank you for pointing that out.
Cheers,
Matt
