Goal: Make XFCE rock in Fedora
by Martin Sourada
Hi all,
as some of you might have noticed (on fedora planet) I have switched
from gnome to xfce and I like xfce very much. However, IMHO there are
issues that need to be addressed to make xfce a first class citizen. I
put together an initial list of them in my wiki space:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Mso/XFCE
Feel free to chime in and edit the page (or its Talk: page) if you feel
something is missing/wrong. Since next major release of xfce (4.10) is
scheduled for next January we're probably talking here about Fedora 17
time frame. So let's join forces and make XFCE rock in Fedora 17.
Cheers,
Martin

DM for Fedora 15 Xfce
by Nathan Thomas
Hi all,
The Docs Project are about to send the Fedora 15 Beta Release Notes off
to the translators, which is essentially their 'feature freeze' for
Fedora 15.
I've included some of the highlights of Xfce 4.8, but I was wondering if
a decision has been made about the display manager for the Xfce Spin? As
far as I understand it, GDM seems to have disqualified itself, SLiM is
unmaintained, LXDM didn't seem to score many votes, and lightdm was
mentioned but is still in the process of being packaged.
If we are going to plump for one of these options then it would be great
to get it into the release notes. Last minute inclusion is possible but
creates a lot of extra work for the Docs Project and the Translation
team.
Any thoughts?
Nathan

Xfce 4.8 for F14 now ready
by Christoph Wickert
I have updated my Xfce 4.8 repository at
http://repos.fedorapeople.org/repos/cwickert/xfce-4.8
and it is fairly complete. Some packages however are now obsolete:
* thunar-shares-plugin: dead upstream, would needed to be ported
from thunar-vfs to gvfs.
* xfce4-remmina-plugin: remmina now has a generic trayicon,
however the new version is only available in F15 or my remmina
repo at http://repos.fedorapeople.org/repos/cwickert/remmina
* xfce4-stopwatch-plugin: dead upstream, uses old panel API.
* xfce4-volstatus-icon: dead upstream, uses HAL. I might revive it
nevertheless.
* xfce4-xfapplet-plugin: dead upstream, uses old gnome-panel API
and handles only old bonobo-based applets but not new dbus based
ones. With gnome-shell there is not much future for panel
applets anyway.
If you can live without these plugins, you are invited to upgrade your
F14 installation to Xfce 4.8. Please note that you will have to remove
the plugins before you upgrade because Thunar and xfce4-panel do not yet
obsolete them. We will do this for F15 Beta and then do more upgrade
tests in order to provide a smooth upgrade.

Christoph

Update notification changes for F15
by Adam Williamson
I just talked to Richard Hughes about some update notification stuff for
Fedora 15, and this nugget came up:
<adamw> hughsieafk: oh, sorry, one other thing - is the update
notification fd.o notification area icon still going to exist for other
desktops to use?
<hughsieafk> adamw, no, that's gone completely
<adamw> hughsieafk: ah, so we're going to lose update notification for
xfce/lxde unless they come up with their own thing. i'll let them
know...
<hughsieafk> adamw, we're still using libnotify so xfce will get
notified, but no icon showing state
AIUI, this means there won't be any notification area icon for update
availability notification in gnome-packagekit for F15. So Xfce (and
LXDE) may need to come up with an alternative arrangement. I'm not sure
exactly what the libnotify support will result in, but this is
definitely something to look at. I'm CCing Richard in case he can
provide any additional details.

Fwd: fedora 14 xfce4.8 notification area and workspace switcher
by desktopdave
-------- Original Message --------
Subject: fedora 14 xfce4.8 notification area and workspace switcher
Date: Mon, 21 Mar 2011 10:02:41 +0000
From: desktopdave <desktopdave(a)gmx.com>
To: christoph.wickert(a)googlemail.com
Hi Christoph,
I didn't know where to post bug reports for xfce4.8 so have used your
gmail account.
The main bug I notice is the notification area. Frequently icons will
vibrate/jiggle around and stop another process from starting, until I
right/left click on them. For instance, I start opera browser and the
icons vibrate/wobble around and opera will not start until I left/right
click in the notification area (systray) a few times.
When I booted this morning a new 'boot messages' icon appeared in the
systray and that locked up the desktop, until I logged in with another
shell and did an update.
The workspace switcher tends to fade out at times so only half a box is
visible, if I pass the pointer over it, it re-appears.
Xfce 4.8 is a really nice desktop and appears faster and more responsive
than 4.6 thanks for the repo.

David

alacarte?
by Kevin Fenzi
Should we add alacarte to the live media and/or the Xfce group?
It seems to work fine here with 4.8, it doesn't have too many deps and
is still gtk2. ;)
Thoughts?

The problem is that F14 originally came with glade3-3.7.1 but it got
downgraded in an update for some reason:
* Thu Dec 16 2010 Rakesh Pandit <rpandit(a)redhat.com> - 1:3.6.7-1
- Revert back to 3.6.7 (Thanks Matthew Booth for patch)
Since this involves a soname change... libxfce4ui needs a rebuild with
the current set of F14 updates.

Icon problems
by Jon Masters
Hey folks,
I just made the switch from GNOME over to Xfce (gnome-shell didn't go
down so well with my own needs). I'm happy so far, and had used this
desktop environment previously, however I have a problem with missing
icons. In rawhide, I'm not seeing any icons in Thunar at all. It's not
just confined to XFCE4 (e.g. totem icons are busted) but it's mostly
affecting this desktop. I suspect I'm missing a package or need to
regenerate some of the icon cache bits...any advice/recommendations?
Jon.

More space on the Xfce spin
by Christoph Wickert
Yesterday XZ compression hit rawhide and the nightly spins dropped from
~694 MB (i686) / 695 MB (x86_64) to 567 / 568 MB.
Now the question is: What are we going to do with this space? What would
you like to see in the F15 Xfce spin?
Some suggestions:
* libreoffice, at least writer, calc and impress
* gnumeric again (if we don't do libreoffice)
* more remmina-plugins: ATM we only have ssh, rdp and vnc, but
xdmcp, telepathy and nx are available, too
* more development stuff, e.g. meld and more geany-plugins
* games, e.g. gnome-games?
More ideas?

non-Xfce apps in the xfce-desktop group
by Christoph Wickert
Recently some system-config-* tools were moved from the base-x group to
their "appropriate desktop environments" [1] [2]. I think removing them
from base-x is a step in the right direction, but adding system-config-*
stuff and especially abrt-desktop or gnome-packagekit with their GNOME
dependencies to the xfce-desktop group seems wrong to me. These are
admin tools, they are already part of the admin-tools group and will be
installed on the current Xfce spin anyway because we install
admin-tools. IMHO 'yum install ydxe-desktop' should only install an Xfce
desktop, not more and not less.
Is everybody fine with me removing
* abrt-desktop
* gnome-packagekit
* system-config-date
* system-config-firewall
* system-config-services
* system-config-users
from xfce-desktop? I'd do the same as I did for LXDE [3].
This still leaves us with the following non-Xfce packages:
* desktop-backgrounds-compat
* gdm
* openssh-askpass
* polkit-gnome
desktop-backgrounds-compat is required and openssh-ask pass not
problematic. polkit-gnome is not problematic either because it has no
GNOME dependencies, but if this changes or they switch to GTK+ 3, we can
still move to lxpolkit.
So the only questionable package is gdm. I think we need a display
manager but I'm no longer convinced it should be gdm. gdm now is in GTK+
3 and requires not only gnome-session but also gnome-settings-manager
and gnome-screensaver with all their deps such as gnome-control-center.
We'd end up with two screensavers but only xscreensaver works in Xfce.
LXDE is too buggy IMHO and I'm currently packaging and investigating
lightdm [4]. I'll let you know once it's read for testing and then we
can decide whether or not to switch.
Questions? Thoughts?
Regards,
Christoph
