Slim is unmaintained afaik but we (the Xfce SIG) experimented with lxdm as a
gdm replacement. This variant has its shortcomings too but might be another
option for you.

Upgraded F14 to F15 beta.
Though an upgrade,
is it possible to have Slim obsolete GDM?
F14 was originally installed from F14 XFCE liveCD.
yum distro-sync didn't work as all the gnome stuff is in the repos.
yum grouperase "Gnome*D*E*"
yum groupinstall XFCE
hasn't done the trick either in other tests.
still pulls back in GDM + deps.
