I also used to be able to set the behavior of the left/right/center mouse buttons. Is this
gone too?

You can see now why I asked about a document about configuration. I don't want to ask
the whole group every time I want to do something.

No, right click the desktop and go to Desktop Settings; in there is Mouse 
Actions which you can configure.
