KMail/Dovecot creating mail folder

I'm running KMail on a Fedora-19 laptop,
taking email from a Dovecot IMAP server on a CentOS-6.4 machine
called "alfred".

I can create an email folder alfred/Spam in KMail on my laptop
(ie a folder called Spam in the top folder alfred)
and after creating it I see that it does actually exist
in ~/Maildir/.Spam/ on the server.
However, I can't see this new folder in KMail (re-started)
on my laptop.

I've had this problem (with other folders) for years.
At one point one could not create folders in KMail in this way;
it was greyed out.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Tim,  I will try to dup this on my f19 machine and see if i can find a solution for you. I
have heard about this somewhere before, but unable to find where i found it. I will check
the bugzilla and see if i can find a solutions before i try to dup it.

Thanks for the response.
How do I "subscribe to" a KMail folder?
I saw a couple of suggestions on the same lines when looking for a solution,
but none of them explained what they meant by "subscribe".
There is no option in KMail=>Folder using this word.
The nearest is "Update Folder", but I have tried this without effect.

Just to follow up to this,
I see now that in KMail=>Settings=>Configure KMail=>Accounts
if I go to the "alfred" account and click on Modify,
the Advanced tab has an entry "Enable server-side subscriptions".
I've ticked this; and in the Serverside Subscriptions windows
I see the folders in this account listed,
all of which I have ticked.
For good measure I have re-started Dovecot on the server,
and closed and re-opened KMail on the laptop.
But all this has had no effect.

Incidentally, I have no idea what "server-side subscriptions" are.
Is this a speciality of KMail, or do other mail programs share the concept?

Actually, I see there is a file ~/Maildir/subscriptions on my server.
This does in fact list the folder Spam that I am interested in,
but which I cannot see from KMail on my laptop.

I see that if I run KMail on my server, I can see this folder.

I can also see it if I run Evolution on my laptop.
So it seems it is a specific KMail problem,
rather than a dovecot issue.

folders in context of IMAP are on the server
there is no "KMail calls Folders"

sorry i am not a kmail user, in thunderbird you simply
right-click on the account name and select "subscriptions"
i think called in english, in german it's label is "Abbonieren"

folder subscriptions are such a baisc IMAP capabilitie
that it is hardly broken on a widely used mailserver

If you right click on the given folder you will see the options
Serverside subscriptions and Manage local subscriptions

the question is "how to subscribe" via kmail

you can hardly do this by right click on a non-subscribed folder
in your folder-list because it is not visible, as said in thunderbird
this is done via right-click on the parent account

Well... I am using Gmail IMAP for one of my accounts and I can subscribe or 
unsubscribe from the Gmail folders in Kmail2 by right clicking on any folder 
shown in the IMAP account.

Unsubscribing with the right click Serverside option hides the folder in 
Kmail2, doing the same right click and  Serverside subscriptions the Gmail 
folders are listed and I can select which folders and subscribe again.

I am quite new to IMAP so sorry if I am misunderstanding the question, maybe 
it is different with Gmail IMAP.

If not how do you re-subscribe to it.
(I assume from what I have seen that you do this in the parent folder?)

I think my problem is more complicated than just subscribing to the folder.
It seems to be specific to KMail.
I have no problem if I use Evolution.

No it is removed from the folder tree in Kmail2 but it will be still visible 
but unchecked via the right click options. 
I do this from the parent folder.

I think Gmail IMAP is different, so cannot really help. Maybe ask on the 
kdepim-users list as I'm sure there are some Dovecot users there.
 
FYI as a test I just created a new IMAP account, called it Gmail2 and once set 
up all the folders where listed in Kmail2 under the new account.

In my case the parent account is the top-level folder "alfred".
When I right-click on this on my laptop and go to Manage Local Subscriptions
I see "alfred" and "inbox" listed, but not "Spam".
If I right-click on "alfred" and go to Serverside Subscriptions 
then "Spam" is listed (it is the only item).

If I ssh to my server and run kmail there then I can see the Spam folder,
I can add to or remove emails from it,
and it is listed in Local Subscriptions.

I have tried creating other folders, both on the laptop and on the server,
and the outcome is always the same.
I've also tried re-installing KMail.

When I ran Evolution on the laptop, it saw the Spam folder.

I tried KMail on an old laptop running Fedora-15,
and the problem was the same,
so it doesn't appear to be anything to do with the version of KMail.

Apart from this quirk, KMail seems to be running perfectly on my laptop.

I'm completely baffled, and as always welcome any insight.

I wouldn't attribute any special significance to that. Running Kmail on the
server is definitely not the way to manage IMAP folders, even if they're on
the same machine. IMAP folders are handled by the server code (Dovecote in
your case) and should normally only be manipulated through IMAP protocol
commands.

no idea what the effect might be. The server's view of what it shows to
clients as "folders" may not even be directly related to file system
directories. It depends on how the server is implemented. If you're lucky,
it will sort of work, but I wouldn't count on it unless you rèally
understand Dovecote. Think of it as editing a database file without
involving the database handler.

When I ran Evolution on the laptop, it saw the Spam folder.


On Evo you subscribe/unsubscribe to folders via a drop down menu under
Folders. That shows you all the folders the server knows about. I don't
know how this compares to Kmail.

I set up KMail on the server to go through dovecot on the server.
This seemed to work as expected.

Creating a KMail folder on the laptop
does have the effect of adding the name 
to ~/Maildir/subscriptions on the server,
so I assume it is going through dovecot.

I didn't have to subscribe to the folder;
it was already shown.
By every test I've tried, the folder seems to be properly set up
on the dovecot server.
It's just that I don't see it on my laptop with KMail.

I'm wondering now if KMail is not updating something.
Could it have cached an old idea of the dovecot setup?

Yes, that should work (assuming it's the same userid etc.)

All I can suggest is that you look at it with a different client, such as
Tbird or Evo, and check if they'd can see the folders. If so, there's a
problem with Kmail (or you've missed some configuration option). If they
don't see the folders, the problem is at the server side, or your manual
folder creation is missing something.

Thanks for trying to help.
As I mentioned, I have no problem with Evolution -
I can see (and open) the "Spam" folder.
I remain baffled.
I'm going to see if it is possible to give direct dovecot commands 
to open another folder.
