Fresh Fedora/KDE 4.2, NetworkManager

Hey guys.  I did a fresh install of Fedora using the
updates-repository enabled, so it pulled down KDE 4.2.  I disabled
GNOME in the setup and clicked the KDE environment instead.  (Still
grabbed some GNOME stuff, but I'm cool with that).

I've tried using the system the past few days...and...um...there's no
NetworkManager in the tray.

And I don't have network access, even though I'm plugged into wired
ethernet.  On the Process List, nm-applet is running.

I can do "killall nm-applet" and then re-launch it, and when I do, I
see the KDE 4.2 tray flicker and expand, but then it shrinks back down
as if nothing happened.  The NetworkManager tray applet never pops up
down there.

Have I done something wrong?  I know that Fedora's KDE4 still
currently uses the GTK NetworkManager applet, but I thought that it
would just work.  By turning off GNOME, did I leave out some essential
package or something?

I don't know, as I freshly installed on Monday and I deselected Gnome, too 
(also pulled in a couple of things that I'm cool with), and I have 
NetworkManager working fine and the applet shows in the system tray. As 
soon as I log in to KDE, the network connects without further ado. This is 
on a desktop computer that has wired internet access.

Here it works fine on wired connections, but not connections that need a pw.  
There I encounter:

Well, it does seem that KDE does not set all that X environment stuff
that GNOME uses.

I'll try grepping for the packs.  Bar that, I guess I'll just
reinstall, and if that doesn't work, perhaps hop to GNOME for a bit.
Gotta get internet working, but I don't feel like doing serious
detective work here.

KDE will probably shine a lot better after F11's DRI2 and KDE 4.2.1
are incorporated anyway, so perhaps I should wait just a little bit
longer.

You don't need to "hop to Gnome". Just use the Gnome applet under KDE,
it works fine.

I have to agree.  It handles the connection correctly, but it does not 
remember the password.  I assume it is not working correctly with wpa-
supplicant.

It's actually an issue with gnome-keyring, not wpa_supplicant.

gnome-keyring is seriously ****ed under KDE.
It's a well reported issue ([1], [2], [3]) with solution in sight.

Hopefully it'll be fixed in F11...
In the mean time, manually kill the gnome-keyring-daemon and restart the
NM applet.

How curious.  I have no idea if that (broken gnome-keyring
configuration) is actually the root of my issue, as I can't run the
applet at all and have no wired connection either.

But, I hope they get the gnome-keyring thing fixed.

I'll go break out my crabby-maintainer pointy-stick to try to at least 
get a comment from the gnome-keyring maintainer(s).  At least

has been languising around since F-9, and been in "NeedInfo maintainer" 
for > 1 month... all this time, not a single comment from them.

I suppose for giggles, for those of you with gnome-keyring problems, 
does using gdm make any difference?  (If not, it's even more likely not 
a kde-specific issue).

I am having keyring problems and AFAIK I am using gdm.  I never changed 
anything from default - just selected login with kde. IIUC, this still uses 
gdm which starts kde.

I doubt that these issues have anything to do with KDM.
I'm using GDM myself and gnome-keyring is just as broken. (evolution,
NM, etc)

Switching to GNOME removes the problem.

I just uninstalled it, removed the old, deprecated /etc/sysconfig/desktop and 
solved the KDE login problem yesterday (~/.dmrc). I'm sticking with KDM.

I guess I'll have to remember my router passphrase for a while and change it 
often, or do what Gilboa suggested, about manually killing gnome-
keyringmanager (and nm-applet) and then restarting nm-applet. It is tedious, 
but it works.

Sadly enough, the gnome-keyring maintainers seems to be at a loss at how
to solve this issue.

Reports of this sort were steady for awhile but have tapered off.

Some change a week or two back, on my F10 netbook, got me to the point where I 
had to have both KNetworkManager and the gnome networkmanager applet running 
for it to be reliable.  It's worth a try.

Huh?!? Is there such a thing? I have been using KDE since Redhat 7.0
days. I have never seen a network applet in the tray. I always thought
it would be nice to have one.
