Kontact is broken

Hello,

I use kontact for all my email and calendaring. It no longer works as of today. It has
been segfaulting 5 or 6 times a day. Constantly. For weeks and weeks. But now it displays
none of my folders. How does one fix this? Is this group also experiencing all kinds of
segfaults using kontact? Starting it from a commandline gives this:

Looking in akonadi_control.error finds this:

Connecting to deprecated signal
QDBusConnectionInterface::serviceOwnerChanged(QString,QString,QString)
Executable "akonadi_knut_resource" for agent "akonadi_knut_resource"
could not be found!

drkonqi does not run. Abrt does not grab anything. How should this be handled? Are we
using old libraries against new source? Any ideas?

I use it as well, mostly email and contacts. I am using F29 and I do not have 
any of the problems you report (the crashes).

Actually in akonadi_control.error I only get:
Unable to register service as "org.freedesktop.Akonadi.Control.lock" Maybe 
it's already running?

This I get for a long time. I noticed it because sometimes I restart akonadi 
because kmail shows that some directory has unread messages although there are 
none left.

# rpm -qf /usr/bin/kontact
kontact-18.04.3-1.fc28.x86_64

It is a normal F28 install fully updated.

Besides segfaulting, the display gets stuck. I see pop-up notifications that I have new
mail but none is in my inbox. When I quit and restart there is the mail.

I don't recall when exactly (or even why now), but akonadi_knut_resource was 
moved from the default kf5-akonadi-server runtime package to -devel.  I 
*think* the reasoning was that it was some sort of debugging/developer tool.  
I can certainly move it back (fixed in kf5-akonadi-server-18.08.2-2 in 
rawhide soon, and updates when ready).

In the meantime, you can try installing kf5-akonadi-server-devel to see if 
that helps any.

That helps. akonadi seems to not immediately segfault now. That is an improvement. Now
looking in /home/sgrubb/.local/share/akonadi/akonadi_control.error I have the following:

Unable to register service as "org.freedesktop.Akonadi.Control.lock" Maybe
it's already running?
"AgentManager::agentInstanceSynchronizeCollection"  Agent instance 
"akonadi_imap_resource_0"  has no resource interface!

Kontact has been running for 10 minutes and it still doesn't show any emails. It says
I have 158 unread emails, but going into a web interface to our mail shows I have 280
unread emails. (That web interface is how I am reading and replying to your email.) I quit
kontact and restart it. It takes over a minute for the screen to show up (which is also
unusual). Now it says I have 280 unread emails. Still not displaying a list of emails
after 10 minutes. This sounds a bit like locking problems.

I have tried to help debug the kontact code with upstream. However, it usually gets
pointed out that I'm bringing them reports on old components that has been superseded
with newer libraries. Which makes me not want to report things upstream because it sounds
like we are not in a configuration they test with. Do we use the newest or same generation
KDE components for all pieces of kontact?  I'm trying to figure out why kontact is
just so buggy. It used to be a great program.

We do make an effort to do so for the latest fedora release.  For example we 
recently refreshed f28 to pim-18.04,

and will be doing so with 18.08.x release series soon (probably after f29 
GA)

OK. That's good to know. I'll see if I can mention this upstream. I really wished
it gave some indication as to what is wrong. Or there is a troubleshooting guide. Or
something that could extract all my email out to mailbox dir format so I can migrate to
something else.

Thanks. The problem that I'm seeing is a communication problem between 
akonadi and kontact. I found some other bug reports online about various 
errors that I'm seeing which suggested installing akonadiconsole. If I go 
into the IMAP Account Agent and do various combinations of Synchronize 
Collection Tree, Toggle Offline twice, and Synchronize All. And occassionally 
akonadictl restart, I can get it working. Barely. It lost the local IMAP 
cache but seems to be slowly restoring it.

I gave these a test yesterday but sadly there are some serious issues with 
akregator crashing which from comments read so far it could possibly be a 
(qt)webengine problem.

There where some other issues with some akonadi agents crashing as well but I 
could not dig deeper with those as I have had to roll back to apps 18.04 as 
this is my main box.
