I've the problem that Amarok cannot play mp3 files and claims that phonon-backend installation must be fixed. It tries to load the package MPEG-1 mp3 decoder but cannot do it. However, all necessary libs are installed and VLC player can play mp3 files without problem. I've googled and tried everything suggested, but could not achieve this one. Any help is appreciated. I'm on Fedora 16 - KDE, fully updated. Thanks in advance.

What backend is Phonon using? Gstreamer or xine?

gstreamer, unless I'm wrong. Both of their packages are installed.

You can verify at:
System Settings -> Multimedia -> Phonon -> Backend .
If using GStreamer you need to install gstreamer-plugins-ugly from RPM Fusion Free as Kevin also mentioned.

It solved it, thank you. I did not know this, otherwise I'd not waste of time.

Install gstreamer-plugins-ugly from RPM Fusion Free.
(You may also want gstreamer-plugins-bad and gstreamer-ffmpeg for some other formats, but -ugly is all that's needed for MP3.)
Automatic codec installation currently doesn't work, at least for MP3, because of: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=680809

Hey, thank you for your time, I solved it but I interestingly have just got that e-mail and another helpful guy told me this way before I got this one. I now understand why he wrote "as Kevin mentioned" in his reply : D Anyway, have a good night/day. Thanks again.
