looks like the server with the mirror-list did not make it to 2013 :-(

hrm, thought I'd followed up on this... anyway, yeah, old box having issues 
again, I think I fixed it a few hours later.

(resolved to retire this old box soon for real this time, new year's 
resolution)

sometimes hardware starting to spit in all oir faces and cry "throw me
away because i do not work any longer for you".....
