Conversation with Dario Freddi and his quick response... It's sad I have no such response from PolKit/Fedora people...

Hi Jaroslav,
Thanks a lot :) if you could provide some additional man power, the thing that needs porting is polkit-qt (kdesupport). We would _really_ like to use the new DBus interface, so that the new product will depend only on DBus calls and not on external libraries, as we don't want another libpolkit-grant fiasco. Let me know what you think, for what it's worth, we could start porting tomorrow.

Hi Dario, I'm Fedore KDE maintainer and as Fedora is moving soon to PolicyKit 1 I'd like to ask if someone is working on PK1 support or if there are some plans for its support. It's going to be default for Fedora 12 so we are going to miss KDE release... As we really need it soon and it comes from Fedora Desktop Team (the Linux desktop hell ;-) we can (should) help with porting. More info could be found in [1] with (too) simple porting guide [2].

Please correct my comprehension of these emails, but is Fedora 12 going to have a must have desktop feature that is only supported by Gnome?

Part of our (kde-sig) evaluation here is whether there is sufficient api docs, collaboration, etc... to make a best effort to make F12/KDE use or be compatible with the PolicyKit1 feature ( http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/PolicyKitOne )
Lacking that, we would have several options, including * request FESCo to reject this feature for F12 as not ready (and use the fallback plan). * drop PolicyKit support altogether

The problem is that PackageKit requires PolicyKit. We'd have to start the GNOME PolicyKit authentication agent if we can't provide our own (and just installing it is no longer enough because it doesn't use D-Bus activation anymore, it needs to be autostarted in the desktop session). That or have a second version of PackageKit built against PolicyKit 0.9, but I think rhughes won't like that idea.

IMO dropping PolicyKit support is not an issue. We need to get FESCO to understand that KDE is not PolicyKit1 ready and in the event that we can't get it there by F12 that this feature will need to be bumped to F13. They need to realize that a feature that effects multiple desktops cannot be imposed unilaterally.
I now see what Rex means, the KDE-SiG needs a voice in FESCO.

Indeed, we need it.
I asked them to add polkit-qt/kde to their blocker but no action... I'm trying to understand changes from patches, source code, docs to prepare quick&dirty polkit support. But it's not long term solution.
One question: is there freedesktop.org board?

It's a wiki, "just do it".

I know it's wiki but I think modifying-only is not enough to accept it as blocker from them.
But (possibly) good news - I have quick&dirty port of polkit-qt to PK1. Not build yet as I need F11 for it (newer glib, gio, missing packages). But it's a good first step. Lot of code dissapeared, some is rewritten from scratch and as there's really bad documentation...
