It's the latency that really hurts in my experience.
for things like gparted or a VMware installer running as root on a
remote machine out of a terminal it's good enough with a 10 ms ping as
well as to operate a VMware window to start, stop and edit virtual
machines which run in backround and then are operated wioth the builtin
native VNC console over a SSH tunnel which is pretty fast and hence used
here even to act with local running virtual machines for consistency
