Some members from the L10N project have identified some issues that need to be
solved to make sure the translations of Fedora are of high quality. Some of them
are infrastructure-related and at today's (-admin) meeting it was suggested to
transfer the discussion here.
I'm sure the folks at Red Hat are doing their best to keep the quality of the
translations high. But the truth is that Fedora's image in the context of
translations is not good; we do hear that a lot, from current and wanna-be
members. We can and should work to improve it. Semi-translated applications are
U-G-L-Y and shout "low QA" in our ears.
Some possible ideas have been listed on the following page:
Please feel free to chip in and help us out correct whatever doesn't seem
reasonable, break tasks into smaller tasks etc.
The bigger picture of some of these problems are:
* L10N of "local" applications (those listed on ) is poor; releases and
package updates contain untranslated strings in many languages. This is
unacceptable for a fully-localized desktop.
* The barrier to contribute to the l10n (be it GUI or Docs) is higher than it
should be (compared to other projects).
* QA of the translations is difficult with the current tools.
Some more concrete ideas to discuss that might concern the InfrProj and the
RelEng team are:
* Integrate better the handling of translation during a "local" package's
lifecycle. Have a flag raised for a package update that introduces new strings
so that translators can translate the new strings before the
repackaging/updating. Include in the schedule for each release a "string freeze
date" and a week later a "translation freeze date" and have all our packages
rebuilt after the latter and before the actual release.
* Move po files on their own cvsroot on cvs.fedoraproject.org to reduce
complexity and maintenance and to increase security (with a new group).
* Move the i18n status pages to Fedora servers (Plone/Turbogears?). Include a
direct link to the pofiles from there so that new members can have something to
work on before getting cvs access.
* In the future, use Plone to automate the QA between team members (ie
coordinators can review translations etc).
* Start working with the complex and tricky path to upstream translations that
no distribution has tackled yet in a successful way. Bring our translators
closer to the upstream projects.
Hope some of the above make sense. :)

Today I was looking into my "Translate" directory and noticed that there
is a desktop-effects folder, but there is only one po file inside. I
would like to know how to make a po file for my language.
Thanks in advance,

TortoiseCVS updates only first folder anaconda..and then says that
CVS update succesfull, etc. and update ends.
When I try to use update command I got the same output..
Just mai is sufficeint. IN is country name.

In about 1 week we would like to push a snapshot of the release notes
beats on the wiki to translation. If you have a beat on the wiki please
try to get any updates completed by Dec 7 23:59 UTC. The snapshot should
be going to Translation by Dec 9 23:59 UTC. Translations will be due
back 10 days later (Dec 19 23:59 UTC) for packaging and publishing.

Newly introduced in the Fedora Project but as a user for long time , I am intending to contribute initially in software translation/documentation (in greek as this is my native language) and later in technical issues (for the moment I have some time constraints). I have the passion to learn and get involved as much as I can in linux-fedora os.
I have already contacted people from the fedora-trans-el list and for start I need the CVS access in order to download the packages. For start, I will ask someone in this list to check my work verifying that everything is getting done as intended.

I wrote before about strange lines, but later on I read them carefully...
What is the purpose of tags in newly introduced lines? Are they
cross-referenced among themselves or to some other line? Because, almost
all of them have no logic if you read only line at a time. Examples:
#: comps-fc6.xml.in.h:1 comps-fc7.xml.in.h:1
"</_description> <default>false</default> <uservisible>false</uservisible>
"<langonly>af</langonly> <packagelist> <packagereq type=\"conditional\" "
"</packagelist> </group> <group> <id>arabic-support</id> <_name>Arabic "
Here we have important (?) tags and values:
<_name>Arabic Support</_name> <_description>
1. What is the purpose of "langonly" if "af" is a code for Afrikaans?
2. "requires" for "Aspell" confirms country code, and so does
3. If "langonly" calls Afrikaans, why does "id" and "name" call Arabic?
Even more interesting is next line (copied only interesting parts):
<_name>Authoring and Publishing</_name>
<_description>These tools allow you to create documents in the DocBook
format and convert them into HTML, PDF, Postscript, and text."
So here we have something that is only for ASm requires bengali font and
asmaric db, langpack for asameese… etc and is named:
"Authoring and Publishing"?!?
<_name>Chinese Support</_name> <_description>
Erm, support for Chinese people that live in Catalonia?
This file looks funny even when I open it in xml editor...

What do I have to do to use another computer with my i18n account ?
I am having problems with my internet access at home (wireless) and I may
use my FC6 at work.
I tried to setup my laptop but I couldn't with the existing account.
Is there a howto ?

The strings in rhn-client-tools package are not splitted by paragraph.
It is hard to translate them that way.
