possible deadline extension relnotes freeze for trans
by Karsten Wade
We need to extend the deadline for relnotes trans freeze by a few hours.
Currently the deadline is 23:59 UTC[1] 24 October (Midnight on Monday).
The extension needs to be until at least 07:00 UTC 25 October.
We will provide an update on this as the evening progresses.
Sorry about the extension and the short notice. No stress, no
worries. :)

[1] I set the timezone the other day as EDT but have seen the error of
my thinking. Henceforth, the common FDP timezone is UTC. Deadlines are
Midnight on the specified day. The convention of 23:59 UTC makes it
certain which day is being specified.

latest release notes builds during test cycle
by Karsten Wade
(Please ask me any questions on this message. I don't want anything not
understood because of my English! I am training myself to write English
for translation, so I appreciate your help, pointers, and corrections.
Thank you.)
We are going to be doing a few ongoing builds of the release notes
during the FC5 test cycle.
This means, at certain points in the schedule[1], we will take all of
the XML source in CVS and rebuild to create a latest release notes.
These latest relnotes are going to be posted on the Web only. This
website will be linked from the very top of the relnotes itself, so that
the relnotes shipped within the FC5 ISO have a link to a more recent
relnotes. This shipped relnotes is also the Firefox default homepage.
Normally, we have freezes for translation to give you a chance to get
all work done.
However, we can include in-process translations that are in CVS for
these rebuilds.
These rebuilds should not be raw. They are intended to be supplemental
to the shipped relnotes. They provide an opportunity to get important
changes into the relnotes just before the actual release date, while
still giving time for proper translation and QA of the shipped relnotes.
We have two ways of doing this build with respect to translations in
CVS:
1. FDP could build all languages as-is from CVS
2. FDP could build only the languages where the translators tell us to
build them
If we choose 1., it is very important that you only check in changes to
CVS that do not break the build. Ideally, if you check-in changes to
your translation between 31 October and 06 November[2], the changes
should fix problems and not create new ones. After the release, the
next trans freeze for CVS is 05 December. During those four weeks, you
can break your language build as often as you like. :)
Thanks,
Karsten
[1] These are labeled "Final Wiki snapshot for Web-only latest relnotes"
on this schedule:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/DocsProject/Schedule
[2] These dates are EDT/EST, because the build engineers are all in that
timezone.

release notes, translation process
by Karsten Wade
We have this temporary translation process:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/DocsProject/Translation
This process may change at any time. The proper system will use a
standardized translation back-end and front-end. You will hear more
about this new process from the translation project.
Release notes will be in XML by 24 October for translation. All
translations must be in CVS by 31 October for inclusion in the FC5 test1
release.
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/DocsProject/Schedule
Your contribution can be incomplete, in terms of translation quality.
This is because the release notes are test quality. We are not
guaranteeing the quality of the content until FC5 release. Just like
the source code of FC is in test-mode, so is the documentation and
translation.
However, it is very important to have the technical points be as close
to accurate as possible. For example, be sure that commands are 100%
accurate coming from the English source. The documentation project is
accountable for the accuracy of those commands.
Thank you very much for your interest and contribution,
Karsten
