Two questions for Fedora translators

Hi Fedora translators!

Could you guys please confirm that the following language mapping list
for the Fedora docs includes correct language and region codes?

To reduce maintenance burden on the Fedora guide owners, I'd like to come
up with a sort of canonical mapping list that could be shared between
multiple guides, branches and repositories. 


On another note, I was wondering what is Fedora translators' opinion on
not publishing docs translations that are below a certain threshold level,
say 15% or 25%?

I realized it would be worth asking you translators while I was working on
updating POT files and syncing translations for the Deployment Guide, since
the most complete translation for this guide is currently at ca. 10%.

I know that translators can publish their translated documents themselves,
if they want to and have been added to the right permission group,
anyway. I'm however not sure how many people in the Fedora translation teams
actually do this.

Yeah, there should be some translation threshold mark to get the docs 
published.

Mapping for sr and sr-Latn looks fine.

As per BCP 47, I would again like to propose dropping the region codes
altogether unless they are absolutely needed for regional
differentiation (pt-BR vs. pt-PL etc.), as many languages span country
borders. From [1]:

"You always start by choosing a primary language subtag, and often
this is all you'll need for your language tag.

Always bear in mind that the golden rule is to keep your language tag
as short as possible. Only add further subtags to your language tag if
they are needed to distinguish the language from something else in the
context where your content is used.

...

Like script subtags, you should only use a region subtag if it
contributes information needed in a particular context to distinguish
this language tag from another one; otherwise leave it out.

For example, en-GB might be a useful distinction for spell-checking,
but the region subtag in ja-JP is unlikely to be useful unless you are
intentionally contrasting it with Japanese spoken in other parts of
the world."

I think it was 80% before, but not sure.

For Deployment Guide (and perhaps for a few other books) I would prefer a more
section specific translation method. Lets say a threshold of 25% is considered
optimum for the first publication of a Doc, I'd rather like a meaningful 25%
with some continuity translated instead of random portions which will not be of
any use.

German seems to be ok as well.

BTW: The language Swiss-German (de_CH:de-CH) isn't used at all. Official
written language in the German part of Switzerland is German and actually
there's no Swiss-German translation needed, as it isn't supported actively
anyway. What are the steps to be done to remove it from fedora project?

I have never done it before and seems never will (Publican is too Fedora
specific). BTW most of bigs docs are outdated.

Before the transition to tx.net we (the translation teams) were able to
publish our translated versions of the guides. Perhaps this still is the
best way for ease everyone's work, and in addition each team may use its
own criteria on how and when to publish the guides. Eric made a wiki
page in order to visualize which team is publishing [2]. 
If we want to keep working like this in tx.net, we may need updated
instructions here [3], and a link to the proper git repository in each
guide on tx.net to now from where to clone it.
I remember Kevin offered himself to publish guides for any team that
needed it, and of course you can count with me too.

Frankly, I don't know much about Publican internals, but you might want to
file a bug against Publican.

Yes, right. I checked and the instructions on that page seem to be
up-to-date. However, if you find anything wrong or outdated there, feel
free to contact the docs team, either over IRC or the mailing list.

Thanks for offering your help! I think that the first thing we need to do
is to better communicate when and what guides branched for F16 are ready for
translations.

Please bear with us while we are updating the guides for the upcoming
release and trying to take care of the not-so-trivial translation process
at the same time.

For Portuguese from Portugal, "pt" will suffice. pt_PT is redundant.

file a bug report against translated section.
Is it possible for docs to work like websites? An hour or two after uploading .po file (or
translating online) in transifex.net 
changes appears in the fedoraproject site.

Right, you can surely build your translated document locally with
Publican. First, clone the appropriate Git repo, and then run the following
command in document's root directory:

$ publican build --langs=bg-BG --formats=html-desktop

Hrmm, contacting the guide owner or the docs team directly is probably less
of a burden. ;-)

FWIW, documentation on library.gnome.org works like this. I'm afraid this is
not currently possible with our toolchain.
