Desktop and AppData translation ?

Hi there,

I would like to answer those questions : how to help contributor to know 
how/what to translate software in gnome software.

Thanks to Emmanuel (Eseyman), i understand that :
  * the name of the software and one short description string are in a 
.Desktop file
  * the full description, link to website, etc. are in a AppData file

Both are freedesktop standards :
  * http://freedesktop.org/wiki/Specifications/desktop-entry-spec/
  * http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Distributions/AppStream/

Files are in the repository of each software and can be translated.
Everything is not in Zanata, but even so I don't think there is a way to 
find only those files in zanata.

Anyway, I still would like to have an overview of a language and after 
blind searching, I found this website : 
https://alt.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/screenshots/f23/
It gives you :
  * a graphic status page that shows you what's in fedora actually : 
https://alt.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/screenshots/f23/status.html
  * a matrix page that shows you what's good and bad for each package : 
https://alt.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/screenshots/f23/matrix.html

Still, nothing related to translation.
Luckily, everything is in a big xml file : 
https://alt.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/screenshots/f23/fedora-23.xml.gz
You can search for you locale, like "fr" and see what's translated.

Do anyone know who is taking care of that website and where is the code ?

Jean,

Zanata only stores translatable files (po, pot, properties, xml).

To search software name and version in Zanata, you are able to search
it in zanata.xml files (project and project-version tag) which the
source repository should have.

For the timeout issues, its most likely because the query runs login
(username and api in header). Zanata would reduce the bandwidth with
any request from anonymous and eventually timeout.

So it best if you can include those header in the request.

Hi,

Actually, Fedora's data should be in Richard Hughes' github repo (AFAIK):

https://github.com/hughsie/fedora-appstream

But from the beginning the idea was to store (and translate) the files in  
applications repos.

The current state of the translations availability for the different  
projects varies:

1. Full availability as Gettext (e.g., KDE, GNOME).

2. Can be translated as raw material (e.g., FontForge)

3. Cannot be translated (e.g., Audacity, PSPP)

4. Cannot be translated and AppData files are in Fedora's repos only (e.g.  
Inkscape).

So there is no centralized translation repo. And will never be.

To be honest, it reminds me the story with .desktop files translation  
(different repos, different teams, and different translations in Fedora,  
openSUSE, Mandriva, Debian, and Ubuntu with mixed results).

=> I agree

I would like to be able to help to have a overview of what is actually 
translated in gnome-software.

It has to be agnostic from where the translation is done.
Sometime the project will be translatable on Zanata, sometime in Gnome, 
in Transifex, in Launchpad, etc.

I'm still searching where is the code and owner of alt.fedoraproject.org 
but I'll contact Richard Hughes, maybee he knows.
